How To Find Pet-Friendly Apartments in Indianapolis

If you have a dog or cat or are thinking about getting one in a couple of months, you’re going to need to rent a pet-friendly apartment in Indianapolis.  Unfortunately, the “pet-friendly” term can seem a bit misleading. However, the “pet-friendly” term doesn’t necessarily have a concrete definition. Some pet-friendly apartment complexes may really give you the option to own a a pet, but place restrictions on breed or size. While other Indianapolis apartment communities may even offer accommodations for your dog like designated parks for your dog to play or complimentary waste disposal bags.

With such a difference in pet-friendly apartments in Indianapolis, what criteria should you use to discover the one that fits your needs?

Start By Reading Over The Apartment’s Pet Policy

A community is only as friendly to dogs and cats as the pet policy. The policy details the guidelines you must follow concerning pet ownership. Some policies give great flexibility and let you keep any pet you want. Some place restrictions on different types of dog breeds. Others might place limits on how many pets you’re allowed, as well as how much they weigh. And then some policies ban dogs altogether and only permit cats or small animals such as hamsters.

Few apartments limit the types of cat breeds allowed. It’s more common for a community to have a pet policy that places restrictions on the number of animals that are allowed in a single apartment. There also might be increased charges associated with having a pet, like increased rent or cleaning costs after move-out, or a pet deposit you have to pay when you move in.

A pet policy with a lot of conditions doesn’t automatically mean that the apartment isn’t “pet-friendly”—provided you fit within the guidelines. However, if you own a dog like a Great Dane or an American Staffordshire Terrier, or are parents to a whole lot of kittens, you should definitely check out the pet policy before you get invested in a particular property.

Check The Amenities For Pets During Your In-Person Tour

Just as you would view the pool on your tour, make sure to check out the amenities for pets. Designated areas for your dog to play give your doggie the chance to get out some energy and make some new puppy buddies. Frequent walking stations with bags for waste disposal, trash cans, and water bowls keep the community clean. Some properties even set up organized pet playdates or discounts on grooming for furry four-legged residents!

Even though these amenities for pets look perfect on paper, the actual test of their pet-friendliness is just how carefully they’re kept up. If the area for dogs to play is covered with weeds and brambles, then it’s pretty much unusable. Pet-friendly properties ensure that waste bags are always in stock and that the cans aren’t overflowing. Basically, when you schedule your in-person tour in Indianapolis, be sure to note whether the pet amenities are maintained as well as the ones for the humans.

Check Out A Number of Reviews To Discover Pet-Friendly Attitudes

If you are on the fence of whether an apartment is friendly to pets or not, be sure to check out reviews on the Indianapolis apartment community. Many people who live in apartments view their dogs or cats as a significant part of the family and willingly share their personal experiences of living in a particular community. You might learn that the maintenance staff carries dog treats to pass out when making a service call to your apartment. Or that the complex’s office sets up a pet adoption event with the humane society. You probably are safe to put those in the “friendly to pets” column.

Reviews will also reveal the complexes that refuse to give back deposits when you move out because of cleaning costs, or those who impose an inordinate amount of monthly rent for dogs and cats. Just don’t let a single unflattering review change your mind, but if you see a whole slew of disgruntled dog and cat owners, then you may want to look at another apartment.
